According to data released by Tianshui, from March to the end of the May Day holiday, Tianshui received a total of 13.3817 million tourists, and tourists spent 7.695 billion yuan, up 35.69% and 36.52% respectively over the same period last year.

Since the launch of Spicy Hot Pot in March, Tianshui has invested a lot of energy in the hope of boosting the economy through the popularity of tourism. However, the data show that the temporary explosion has a limited effect on the economy.

During the May Day holiday, the Tianshui Bureau of Statistics released economic data for the first quarter of 2024, which happened to include the hottest March for Tianshui Spicy Hot Pot. In the first quarter, the GDP of Tianshui was 19.01 billion yuan, an increase of 4.3% over the same period last year at constant prices. This growth rate is lower than the national level of 5.3%, and even lower than the 5.9% of Gansu Province.

Whether compared with the cities in the province, or compared with itself, Tianshui's economic growth in the first quarter is not ideal.

From the perspective of Gansu Province, the economic growth rate of Tianshui in the first quarter was at the end. Among the 14 prefectures and states in Gansu, Tianshui ranked 12th in GDP growth in the first quarter, only slightly higher than Lanzhou and Gannan. Jinchang had the highest GDP in the first quarter, reaching 18.9 per cent, and half of Gansu's prefectures and cities grew at a rate of more than 6 per cent.

Compared with Tianshui's own data over the years, the growth rate of 4.3% in the first quarter of 2024 was also lower. Tianshui GDP grew by 4.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2023 and 8 per cent in the first quarter of 2019 before the outbreak.

In terms of industrial structure, the proportion of the added value of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries in Tianshui is about 10:25:65. It can be seen that the proportion of the secondary industry in Tianshui is relatively low, while for most cities, the secondary industry represented by industry is the main engine of economic growth.

In the first quarter, fixed asset investment in Tianshui fell 8.1% from a year earlier, of which real estate investment fell 24.1%. In January 2024, the relevant central departments also reported the situation of blindly borrowing money to build trams in Tianshui, Gansu Province. Regardless of the construction cost, the annual loss of Tianshui Tramway reached 38.4 million yuan.

Even if Spicy Hot Pot is popular, the tertiary industry (service industry) in Tianshui grew by only 3.3% in the first quarter, with the added value of accommodation and catering growing faster, up 17.7%.

In the first quarter, driven by the popular out-of-circle effect of the "Tianshui Spicy Hot Pot", retail sales of consumer goods in the city totaled 9.918 billion yuan, up 7.9 percent from the same period last year, according to the Tianshui Bureau of Statistics. In fact, retail sales of consumer goods in many cities in Gansu have increased by 8% or more than in Tianshui, such as Jiuquan, Zhangye, Longnan and Dingxi, but these cities do not rely on Spicy Hot Pot to become popular.

Harbin, which became the "top stream" in the winter of 2023, had an annual GDP growth rate of only 3.1 per cent. In Zibo, which came out in the spring of 2023, the annual GDP growth rate was 5.5%, but the secondary industry accounted for nearly half of the GDP, the secondary industry grew by 6.3%, and the tertiary industry grew less than the secondary industry by 4.7%.

From the perspective of macro data, tourism-related industries account for a small proportion of GDP. The added value of tourism and related industries accounted for 3.71 per cent of GDP in 2022 and only 4.56 per cent in 2019. The situation of some tourist cities is different. For example, Haikou is a major tourism city that has been developed for many years, and the contribution rate of tourism to GDP is 14%.

In addition to tourism, Tianshui is developing Spicy Hot Pot-related industries, which may continue the spillover effect.

According to Gansu Economic Daily, chili pepper in Gangu County, Tianshui City is one of the "soul seasonings" of Spicy Hot Pot. The local plan is to raise 10 million yuan in bonus funds every year to guide leading enterprises to adopt the model of "company + cooperative + base + peasant household". Build a large-scale planting base and form an integrated management system of production, storage, processing, transportation and marketing, and e-commerce. At present, the local R & D and production of chili noodles, silk, Ding, slices, oil, sauce and other seven series of more than 60 products.

Ping'an Township, Zhangjiachuan Hui Autonomous County, Tianshui City, invested 4 million yuan in village collective development funds to build a potato vermicelli production line with coating technology, and produce characteristic products such as beef vermicelli soup, spicy vermicelli, Hot and Sour Rice Noodles, juice noodles and so on. Tianshui is also making great efforts to develop the vegetable industry, and plans to build 5000 mu of steel shed in 2024, and use special funds to help farmers raise seedlings.
